I'm on an Arthurian legend kick! Merlin is my favorite character. Sadly he is not in Le Morte d'Arthur very much (which I am reading currently in English class) but there are tons of novels devoted to him, so here are my favorites:

Top left: Merlin from The Merlin Codex by Robert Holdstock. Unlike the others, he's a bit of a brat, and that's not something I'd expect from Merlin most of the time...conserves his magic just so he'll stay young. That's what I'd do, if I had it.

Top right: Myrddin Emrys from Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon cycle. This was the first Merlin I ever read about, and definitely my favorite. If I had to pick one of these for a boyfriend...

Bottom Left: Caius Merlyn Britannicus, from Jack Whyte's Camulod series. AKA, the book series I was hoping the movie King Arthur would resemble. Merlyn is all-human here, taking on the mantle of sorcerer after great personal tragedy. He looks a bit different here than how I imagined him while reading, but I wanted him to stand out compared to the others.

Bottom right: Not from a novel, but from the movie Excalibur! The best Arthur movie. Nicol Williamson is awesome and makes me giggle. He plays Merlin as such a weirdo, it's perfect.

Sam Neill's version of Merlin: NOT HERE! I hated that movie.

Have you read the 'Lost Years of Merlin' series? It's quite good.

It's been ages since I read the original trilogy, but I remember them all being solid work.

Williamson's Merlin is by far my fav, aside from Excalibur being awesome on every level, the way he does Merlin is so...whacked.

Boorman said something like, "Nicol managed to say every vowel sound in each syllable."

Merlin: "It took me NIIEENE moons, to recover, and all for this lunacy called love, this mad distemper that strikes down both beggar and king. NNNNEVER again. Never!"
